Columbia University’s recent announcement that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will teach a course in foreign policy during the fall 2023 semester should be seen as an opportunity for students to gain valuable insights from a seasoned political leader. The course, titled “Inside the Situation Room,” will be taught alongside School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) Dean Keren Yarhi-Milo.
This course aims to provide students with a unique inside look into how international relations decisions are made. By examining case studies such as the search for Osama bin Laden, the “red line” in Syria, and negotiations with Iran, students will be able to critically and analytically assess how leaders and other actors view the world, arrive at their decisions, and how various social, political, and psychological factors shape the policies they devise to promote their interests abroad.
Clinton’s expertise and firsthand experience in the field of foreign policy are invaluable assets for the students who will take her course. As a former Secretary of State under President Barack Obama and a two-time failed presidential candidate, she has been directly involved in the decision-making process at the highest level of government. Her insights into the inner workings of the situation room will greatly enhance the educational experience for the students.
The collaboration between Clinton and Yarhi-Milo promises to deliver a well-rounded and comprehensive educational experience. While Yarhi-Milo will teach students about the theories that go into decision-making and strategy, Clinton will share her personal experiences from inside the situation room. As a Professor of Practice and a Presidential Fellow at Columbia Worlds Project, Clinton is working with senior administrators on various major initiatives, particularly those focusing on global politics and policy and supporting female leaders in those arenas. Given her extensive experience and the opportunities for learning that her course offers, it is evident that students at Columbia University will significantly benefit from her presence on campus.
The course is open to Columbia SIPA students and undergraduate students from Columbia College, Barnard College, and the Columbia University School of General Studies.
