A large explosion occurred at South Fork Dairy in Dimmit, Texas, on Monday night. Over 18,000 cattle were killed in the fire, making it the “deadliest barn fire for cattle overall.”
The explosion’s smoke could be seen from 80 kilometers distant.
The fire spread to other buildings on the property, including the one where the cattle are kept while they are transported to the milking area.
During the fire, one person was trapped inside the building, but they were rescued by first responders and evacuated to a hospital in critical condition.

According to the Texas State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the original explosion could have been caused by a mechanical defect. However, the matter is still being investigated, and nothing has been established.

“It was probably what they call a ‘honey badger,’ like a vacuum that sucks manure and water out,” said Castro County Sheriff Sal Rivera. “It is possible that it overheated and the methane and things like that might have ignited and spread out with an explosion and a fire.”
In light of this occurrence, Margie Fishman, Public Relations Manager for the Animal Welfare Institute (AWF), has called on all farms to ensure that necessary fire safety measures have been implemented, “We hope the industry will remain focused on this issue and strongly encourage farms to adopt commonsense fire safety measures. It is hard to imagine anything worse than being burned alive.”
The AWF reports that this was by far the deadliest bar fire for cattle, as well as the most catastrophic barn fire in Texas since they began recording them in 2013.
“There’s some that survived, there’s some that are probably injured to the point where they’ll have to be destroyed,” said Sheriff Rivera.
