Tim Levin of Insider recently drove from New York City to Washington, D.C., and back, and discovered that he had to spend over a quarter of his time charging his electric vehicle.
That wasn’t even the worst part.
He made the drive in early April when the weather was cold, Levin wrote for Insider. Unfortunately, so did the interior temperatures — within the car, that is, due to the effect operating the heater had on the vehicle’s battery life and, hence, range.
Levin selected to travel in a Toyota bZ4X, a brand-new electric SUV on the market. However, the vehicle’s battery was designed for durability rather than quick charge.
Such trade-offs are not uncommon in a relatively new market like electric automobiles.
That means the bZ4X battery can charge at a maximum rate of 100 kilowatts. so the rate was dubbed “uncompetitive” by Levin, but despite charging the vehicle’s battery three times throughout his trip, he never saw it charge so quickly.
As a result, he reported “some excruciating charging times.”

Levin completed the 500-mile round trip in nine hours, averaging nearly 55 miles per hour behind the wheel. Given the volume of traffic on that stretch of road, that’s a fair speed.
However, he had to charge the car for a further three hours, making his effective rate of movement more like 40 mph.
Of course, three fill-ups in a gas vehicle would be anticipated to take less than an hour. However, for a 500-mile trip, one fill-up would have sufficed, reducing travel time even further.
Levin was eager to point out that the vehicle itself was a significant part of the problem.
“Many vehicles beat the Toyota’s so-so 222-mile range, cutting down the frequency and urgency of pit stops,” he noted. Teslas and Hyundais both charge more quickly, as well, and Telsa owners have the additional advantage of Tesla’s “expansive, private charging network.”
Drivers are not required to stay with their vehicles when charging, so some of the charging time can be used for other purposes; Levin did some sightseeing in D.C. during one of his charging stops.
EV drivers are still encouraged to organize charging stops ahead of time before hitting the road. Running the battery down to zero in the middle of nowhere is obviously a horrible idea, and there isn’t nearly as much infrastructure to support electric vehicles as there is for regular gas-powered versions.
And, unlike gas vehicles, which emit heat as a byproduct of the engine combustion process, electric vehicle drivers must use the energy stored in their battery to turn up the heat.
According to Levin, doing so on his journey reduced the stated battery range from 176 to 125 miles. Rather than adding another 45-to-60-minute charging break to his drive, he elected to dress warmly and employ the “more efficient” seat and steering-wheel warming capabilities.

Levin said the discomfort of the cold led him to “curse these silly electric cars under my breath once or twice.”
However, he concluded, “The electric future seems inevitable at this point, so we might as well learn to live with it.”
