Two of the top three box office flops of 2022 were both animated Disney films that cost the corporation more than a quarter-billion dollars.
“Strange World” was undoubtedly the largest flop of 2022, costing Disney about $200 million and garnering the lowest audience score in Disney animated film history with a “B” rating.
According to Deadline, the film had a total budget of $317.4 million but only grossed $73.6 million at the box office.

“Lightyear” ranked third on the list of 2022’s greatest flops, losing $106 million at the box office and garnering the lowest CinemaScore of any “Toy Story” picture and a 74 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to 90 percent or more for every other film in the franchise.

The showing of woke philosophy that pervades both films is the unifying theme between these films and the reason they both lost more money than any other animated feature in Disney’s history.
“Strange World” is a narrative about a family of explorers who must save their own civilization by embarking on a perilous subterranean voyage.
The film was bound to be a hit with a terrific premise and an A-list ensemble that included Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, and Gabrielle Union.
Instead, Disney pushed the edge by including the first openly gay lead character in a Disney animated film. The 14-year-old youngster confides in his grandfather about his same-sex crush on a classmate.
“Lightyear” had all the makings of a box office smash. Until the company’s woke agenda gained center stage, the “Toy Story” franchise was one of Disney’s most profitable and popular stories.
The film deviated from the typical “Toy Story” tone, instead focusing on a science fiction viewpoint and including a same-sex kiss that was initially cut from the film but was returned prior to its release.

According to The Wrap, Pixar CCO Pete Docter reacted to “Lightyear’s” financial and critical failure.
“We’ve done a lot of soul-searching about that because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise. I think probably what we’ve ended on in terms of what went wrong is that we asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they’re like, ‘Great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex?’ And then we drop them into this science fiction film that they’re like, ‘What?’” Docter said.
Similarly, critics and businesspeople defended “Strange World,” citing COVID-19, foreign nations prohibiting the film because of its on-screen LBGT depiction, and bad marketing as the key reasons for its failure.
According to Fox Business, film reviewer Christian Toto had a different take on the two massive animated Disney flops.
“Hollywood doesn’t fully grasp the ‘go woke, go broke’ mantra, but some executives are getting the message. We’ve seen woke regrets at Netflix and Warner Bros .… Disney may soon realize that woke isn’t a money-making position. We have decades of wonderful, woke-free content for parents to consider,” Toto said.
Surprisingly, “Top Gun: Maverick” was the highest-grossing film in 2022, and the top two animated films were “Minions: The Rise of Gru” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 2.” All three films avoided woke doctrine in favor of providing a joyful experience for moviegoers.
