Al Sharpton, the president of the National Action Network and a left-wing activist, has accused McDonald’s of failing to appropriately address allegations of racial discrimination.
Sharpton asked that McDonald’s Corporation correct “longstanding” issues involving their allegedly discriminatory practices in a letter issued to the corporation on Thursday.
Sharpton warned that he and his group would “mobilize to demand action against the fast-food giant.”
“We find it appalling and inexcusable that McDonald’s Corporation has not satisfied its differences with the Black community,” Sharpton said in the letter, before noting the number of legal woes already facing the fast food titan.
“There are lawsuits brought by Black franchises. Another brought by a Black former executive over racial discrimination from the highest levels.”

Sharpton reiterated his assertions that McDonald’s is racist, accusing the fast food chain of providing “little justice” with its famous Big Macs – and little else.
“You cannot sell Black folks Big Macs and give us little justice,” he wrote.
“And let’s not forget the $10 billion lawsuit brought by Byron Allen over the fact that Black-owned media did not get its fair share of McDonald’s supersized advertising budgets,”
Sharpton said, referring to a lawsuit filed last year by Allen, who accused McDonald’s of excluding black-owned businesses from advertising with the company.
Allen, of Allen Media Group, said at the time that McDonald’s committed “overt and systemic racism” by refusing to advertise on its subsidiaries, which included The Weather Channel and Comedy TV.
“This is about economic inclusion of African American-owned businesses in the U.S. economy,” Allen said at the time. “McDonald’s takes billions from African American consumers and gives almost nothing back.”
Allen’s case is still pending and will go to trial in May, according to the St. Louis American, after McDonald’s twice failed to have the case dismissed.
On top of Allen, Sharpton made a point of mentioning a slew of other alleged disastrous exits by notable black executives.
In his letter, Sharpton went on to highlight McDonald’s recent dismissal of John Rogers – “a well-respected business leader for the Black community” – from their Board of Directors, implying that it was a similar act of exclusion.
Rogers was alleged to have left the corporation in late March, at the same time as Robert Eckert. According to a McDonald’s news release, both joined the company’s board of directors on the same day in 2003.
Their retirements were described as part of the company’s “commitment to ongoing refreshment that maintains an appropriate balance of continuity and institutional knowledge with fresh perspectives among Directors.”
It’s unclear why Sharpton characterized Rogers’ departure as racially motivated.
However, a similar case occurred last December, when Michael Peaster, a former McDonald’s executive, sued the company’s CEO, Chris Kempczinski, after being fired.
According to Business Insider, the lawsuit claimed that his termination was racist and ethnically motivated, while McDonald’s claimed that it was because Peaster was bad at his job, which was overseeing Kempczinski’s personal security.

Sharpton concluded his letter by making clear that if McDonald’s fails to “immediately acknowledge and address these issues,” he and his organization will begin “a national campaign” targeting the company.
