A California supermarket reportedly dismissed a self-described autistic grocery store cashier after he was beaten three times while working there.
Austin Sherrell, a Bakersfield-based employee at the Vons supermarket who identifies as “mildly autistic,” worked there. While performing his job at the grocery, he was the target of three consecutive violent assaults. He claims that after being advised to take time off and having his hours reduced after filing for worker’s compensation, he was subsequently dismissed.

Sherrell was in charge of bagging goods, gathering carts, and removing debris from around the store. He claimed he was well-liked by the clients at his shop in an interview with the neighborhood NBC affiliate KGET.
“You know, not to toot my own horn, a lot of people say that they like me,” he said. “A lot of people are like, ‘Oh, we like that [employee].’ … Like, I hear it. I hear it all the time.”
In January, the initial incident took place at a dumpster behind the shop.
“I’m taking out the trash,” he said. “Two people are stealing. They go out the side (door).” Upon seeing him, one of the thieves immediately punched him in the face. The other person then pepper-sprayed him. “I’m bleeding,” Sherrell said. “I get away, I run back inside.” By the time police arrived, the two thieves were gone.
The second occurrence took place in March. Once more, Sherrell was emptying the dumpster when a man attacked him with a knife. The cashier stopped the blade so that it couldn’t hurt him by stuffing a roll of additional garbage bags into his apron. Once more, the cops arrived too late to apprehend the offender.
The clerk said he was rattled by the assault. “The first incident didn’t shake me too much but the second incident, like, when you are close to death, I’m the most shook up I’ve ever been in my entire life,” Sherrell said. “The most scared I’ve even been in my entire life.”
Finally, Sherrell was working inside the business in April when two ladies approached him and said that a man there was harassing them while potentially under the influence of drink or narcotics. Sherrell claims that he approached the man alongside a manager and a store security guard, who allegedly watched as the attacker confronted Sherrell.
“He gets in my face, he’s cussing me out, he’s threatening my life,” Sherrell recalled. “I back away, he comes back in my face. I back away again. The third time I defend myself, I push him off of me.”
Sherrell filed a claim for worker’s compensation after being frightened by three assaults in only four months.
“My biggest problem – what I have is – I’m mildly autistic,” he said. “I have a hard time processing things.” On a GoFundMe page, Sherrell’s father Adam said that Austin suffered nightmares and panic attacks after the knife attack.
But while an investigation was underway, the store suspended him. He claims that his hours were reduced when he got back. He allegedly got fired soon after for groping a client.
Sherrell told KGET that although he has no desire to work for the grocery chain again, he is grateful to the patrons that were kind to him while he was there.
