Dianne Feinstein, California’s senior Democrat senator, has been under pressure to vacate her position due to continuing health issues aggravated by her elderly age, but she appears convinced that she would stay until the end.
Despite considerable criticism from other members of her party, Feinstein minimized her two-month absence on Thursday.
The senator, who was first elected in 1992, was hospitalized to the hospital in early March, leaving the Democrats without her vote – a circumstance that has slowed the confirmation of President Joe Biden’s judicial nominees.
Feinstein was admitted to the hospital with shingles, a dangerous skin illness that affects the elderly.

The senator, who turns 90 in June, has faced questions about her cognitive health and memory in recent years, though she has maintained her usefulness in representing a state of roughly 40 million people.
Her mental status was brought to light when her office released a statement indicating she will not run for re-election in 2024. When questioned about it by a reporter, Feinstein rejected the statement and stated she didn’t know her staff had released it.
Feinstein issued a statement on March 2 after being brought to the hospital, saying, “I was diagnosed with shingles during the February recess.” I’ve been hospitalized and am having therapy in San Francisco; I expect to recover completely.
“I hope to return to the Senate later this month.”
That did not occur.
She published another remark on April 12 after several weeks.
“When I was first diagnosed with shingles, I expected to return by the end of the March work period,” the senator said. “Unfortunately, my return to Washington has been delayed due to continued complications related to my diagnosis.”
“I intend to return as soon as possible once my medical team advises that it’s safe for me to travel. In the meantime, I remain committed to the job and will continue to work from home in San Francisco.”
Feinstein requested that another Democrat temporarily replace her on the Judiciary Committee, but Republicans refused.
A number of Democrats, including Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips and California Rep. Ro Khanna, urged her resignation and even argued that her refusal was a “dereliction of duty” on her part.
Finally, according to Politico, Feinstein hinted on Monday that she was “hopeful” she would return to the Senate next week, and she issued a statement Thursday stating her extended absence was no great problem.

But her insistence that there has been no slowdown is a sort of smoke screen, as far as many are concerned.
Twitter user Terrence Daniels, for instance, had a salient point when he wrote, “But to be clear they are being confirmed without you being involved in any way shape or form correct? Senator was never supposed to be a lifetime appointment, this isn’t a retirement home! We need term limits!”

If there had been any tight votes, the Democrats would not have had Feinstein’s vote to help them overcome the opposition, as Daniels correctly points out. And this is a significant issue for them.

I’m sorry but AOC has a point. You being unable to attend, and I don’t begrudge you healing time shingles is miserable, is why there are several justices that can’t move forward. To put out a press release that states otherwise isn’t truth either.

Even Feinstein’s admirers felt that her absence had been insignificant, and most pushed her to retire in response to her post.
Clearly, her flippant attitude toward her absence is not popular with her Democratic colleagues.
