After starting to accept migrants this week, a New York hotel has canceled a block of more than 35 room reservations made months earlier by an engaged couple for their wedding.
Following the announcement of a proposal to lodge migrants at hotels in Orange and Rockland Counties by Democratic Mayor of New York City Eric Adams, the Crossroads Hotel in Newburgh, New York, some 70 miles north of Manhattan, started taking in refugees on Thursday.
The Queens-based engaged couple is already rushing to book hotels for their 60 guests before their May 20 wedding, which is less than a week away.

“What we feel right now is, we feel very cast aside,” groom-to-be Sean Plunkett said. “This is a whole, big hot-button issue, but at this point we really just want what’s best for us and our friends and family,” he added.
According to the couple, the hotel failed to inform them that their reserved rooms had been canceled. They claimed that when they contacted the hotel after learning that it would be housing migrants, they were informed that both their reservations and all other block reservations for the ensuing few months had been canceled.
“We figured it would be a situation where they’d be there, we’d be there and it’d be fine,” Plunkett said.
According to the pair, the hotel would be hosting visitors from Ireland, Ecuador, Japan, Canada, and England. There were other engaged couples in the same predicament as the Queens couple. The Crossroads Hotel reportedly canceled a Florida couple’s reservation for 30 rooms ahead of their June wedding to make a place for migrants, according to the New York Post.
“We felt discarded, disappointed, and angry that they just tossed us aside to make an extra dollar for the hotel. It’s just not right,” Deanna Mifsud, a bride-to-be, said.
The couple also said they weren’t adequately notified by the hotel, telling the Post that only one guest had been informed their reservation was canceled. “We were on hold for 45-plus minutes and were ultimately told, ‘We can’t do anything for you, bye-bye,’ and we were hung up on,” Mifsud said.

Additionally, CBS New York claims that a nearby Christian organization was forced to relocate after losing access to the structure.
The Crossroads Hotel is owned and operated by the Choice Hotels group, which also owns the Comfort Inn, Quality Inn, and Cambria Hotels brands. Following the publication of an article on the last-minute cancellations, a Choice Hotels representative reportedly told CBS New York that the business has called the impacted guests and is “ensuring they are assisted with their accommodations.”
According to NBC 4, Orange County and the City of Newburgh filed three lawsuits on Friday in an effort to stop the transfer of migrants to nearby motels. They are suing Ramada, The Crossroads Hotel, and New York City.
