Jake Burdett is a self-described far-leftist who enjoys stirring up trouble. Naturally, he uses the pronouns “progressive activist, Social Democrat/Democratic Socialist” in his Twitter bio. Advocate for affordable housing. YIMBY detractor a law student at U. of B. He/Him.”
He attempted to disrupt a number of Republicans on Capitol Hill in Washington on Tuesday during a news conference about the World Health Organization.
Burdett was startled when Louisiana Rep. Clay Higgins, a former police officer, physically pulled him from an event that he merely intended to troll and that he was the one being arrested after being given the chance to stay.

“I am currently being detained by DC Police for asking tough questions to far right extremist Congressmen @RepGosar and @laurenboebert at a press conference. Rep Clay Higgins proceeded to assault/physically remove me from the press conference. For this, the cops detained me, not him,” Burdett said in a tweet Wednesday after the encounter.
The Hill said that Burdett was on Capitol Hill in support of the resurrection of the dormant Medicare for All Act along with the Maryland Progressive Healthcare Coalition.
The coalition’s founder, Kristy Fogle, told the media that Burdett had mentioned wanting to ask Boebert a “tough question” after they stumbled onto the news briefing.
The protester first approached Arizona Republican Rep. Paul Gosar, whom he questioned about attending a conference hosted by far-right fringe figure Nick Fuentes and about an advertisement that was released during the 2020 election cycle in which Gosar’s family members spoke out against him. The protester’s own video of the encounter was posted online. He wasn’t interested in knowing the answers to either of these queries; smearing the congressman was plenty for him.
During the video, Higgins approached Burdett and said, “I’m a congressman. I’ll make you a deal. Listen, let this man talk, and then I’ll come talk to you privately.”
“All I’m asking you to do is just peacefully stand by with your camera, and I promise you — look at me — I’ll come talk to you straight up and answer all your questions.”
Let’s just say that wasn’t what actually happened.
Rep. Lauren Boebert of Colorado stood up next, and Burdett, who seemed unfazed, once more stepped up to ask Boebert about her most recent divorce application.
“Did it have anything to do with giving food poisoning to Shooters Bar and Grill?” he said, referencing a 2020 incident in which pork sliders from Boebert’s restaurant were involved in a food-poisoning incident at a local rodeo, according to Salon.
Boy, what a “tough question” that was.
At that point, Higgins, a former sheriff, stepped in and sidelined what was clearly an unbalanced troll act.
“You’re out, you’re out,” he can be heard saying in the video:

“Get off me, get off me, Clay Higgins. Get off me. What are you trying to do, Clay Higgins? … You’re manhandling me. Get off me,” Burdett said.

Thankfully, no one appears to have been hurt in the incident.
On Twitter, Boebert thanked Higgins for defending her “as a radical socialist attempted to disrupt me during a press conference.”

Also on Twitter, Higgins said that Burdett was “a 103M” — police code for “disturbance by a mental person.”

“One agitator activist protestor became very disruptive and threatening in violation of the law,” the text in the accompanying video said. “Congressman Higgins successfully de-escalated the situation.”
Fogle claims that the Capitol Police interviewed the activist after Higgons claimed to have handed Burdett over to them. Burdett, meantime, claimed to have been detained by “DC police”—a term that, in most cases, refers to a separate organization, the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia. Which of these is true is unknown.
A statement from Capitol Police merely said, “We are aware of this situation, interviewing the people who were involved, and reviewing the available video.”

Amazingly, the same left-leaning crowd that wants to act as though their lives are in great danger if we expose their shortcomings will find nothing wrong with this, even if it’s just because the demonstrator is one of them.
In fact, they’re going to agree with Burdett that this was an improper use of force and blame Clay Higgins for diffusing the situation.
The truth is that Burdett didn’t appear to be in compos mentis, and Higgins had no idea how insane he was based on the available evidence.
Keep this in mind the next time Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York complains about the risk she faces and the fact that she won’t be standing up for Republicans the way Clay Higgins did for his colleague.
