The proportion of foreign-born workers in the American workforce reached historic highs last year, a development that coincides with a rise in immigration following global lockdowns and a labor shortfall facing the economy of the country.
According to figures issued this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, foreign-born workers made up 18.1% of the workforce in 2022, up from 17.4% in 2021.
In comparison to Asians, who make up one-quarter of the foreign-born labor force, Hispanics make up nearly half of it. Last year, the average weekly wage for workers who were born abroad was $945, while the average weekly wage for workers who were born domestically was $1,087.

Foreign-born workers were more likely to work in service, natural resources, construction, logistics, and maintenance than native-born workers, who were more likely to hold jobs in management, professional, and sales occupations. Males who were born in the country were 66.0% more likely to be in the labor force than men who were born abroad, at 77.4%.
As the United States and other countries roll back public health regulations that restricted immigration and temporary residency, the proportion of workers who were born abroad has increased as a percentage of the total workforce.
One analysis from Pew Research Center found that there has been a rise in “the number of immigrants receiving green cards as new lawful permanent residents, as well as a partial rebound in arrivals by foreign students, tourists, and other lawful temporary migrants.”
In the meantime, illegal immigration has increased to record levels over the last two years. According to figures from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, as many as 5.5 million people entered the country illegally during the Biden administration.
The White House’s proposed immigration plans have come under fire from some who claim that the situation has deteriorated due to a lack of focus on border security and increasing resources for those who enter the nation.
This month, as officials get ready for the repeal of Title 42, a law that allowed them to swiftly turn away immigrants at the southern border on the basis of public health, a number of localities and at least one state declared emergencies.
There have been reports of sizable gatherings of illegal immigrants trying to enter the nation between ports of entry.
During the past three years, the labor market has been largely seen as a bright light in an otherwise bleak economic environment characterized by record inflation and ongoing supply chain bottlenecks.
On the other hand, low labor force participation across the economy has made both trends worse as companies raise wages to fill their payrolls and either recruit or retain more workers. Reduced labor force participation has been linked to an increase in premature retirements during the lockdown-induced recession.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 30.0 million foreign-born workers in the United States as of last month, exceeding the 27.7 million workers totaled in the month prior to the lockdowns and vastly surpassing the 22.0 million workers three years ago. More figures show that there were 131.1 million native-born workers in the country last month, which is still below pre-recession levels.
According to additional information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, foreign-born workers made up around 15.0% of the workforce in 2005.
