A Texas Army veteran didn’t realize his life was about to alter as he pursued his “childhood dream” of becoming a published author.
Shawn Warner was selling his young adult mystery book, “Leigh Howard and The Ghosts of Simmons-Pierce Manor,” outside a supermarket on July 1 when someone decided to record and promote his book on the social networking site. The video has gone popular on TikTok.
Warner can be seen describing his book in the clip as the TikTok user posted the line, “I just wanted to show a stranger some kindness.” The user later added, “I imagined all the times I worked so hard and never got any recognition.”
By Saturday, that video had received over 3 million likes and over 18 million views.
The urge to obtain a copy of the book is expressed in thousands of comments.
“Awe I’m gonna have to get this book. That’s so awesome that you took the time to promote him!!!” one user wrote.
And that was all it took for the book to become the most popular one on Amazon, where it is still at the time of writing (Sunday morning Eastern Time).
Warner expressed his gratitude for the whole thing in a subsequent video.
“It was just an amazing thing that happened after that, and it’s all on you for your kindness and generosity,” Warner said. “Thank you.”
Warner jokingly said, “You’d think as a writer, I’d have words for it, but I don’t — just thank you.”
All it took was someone taking a few minutes out of a day to change Warner’s life and make a lifelong dream come true.
“This is like, textbook, how kindness works,” Warner said.
A hardcover edition and an audiobook are also currently being produced, according to the author.
The veteran defended his sudden prosperity by saying that “the Lord helps those who help themselves” and that persistence and hard effort were essential. He continued by saying that he constantly prayed to God for something similar to occur.
According to Warner, a few minutes of kindness can have a significant impact on someone else’s life.
