The outcomes of state education standards are negative. The same is true of Kamala Harris’ remarks as vice president. They are a bad mix when combined.
Scott Jennings, a CNN analyst, ripped at Harris on Sunday for her phony criticism of Florida’s new social studies curriculum.
“This is a completely made-up deal,” Jennings said on “State of the Union.”
A 216-page document that the state Board of Education authorized on Wednesday contains just one innocent sentence that is under contention.
“Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,” the new standards say.
Based on this one sentence, Harris leaped to an extraordinary conclusion.
During a Friday speech in Jacksonville, Florida, the vice president said “extremists” in the state “want to replace history with lies.”
“Middle school students in Florida to be told that enslaved people benefited from slavery,” she said.
Jennings noted the absurdity of Harris’ criticism.
“I looked at the standards. I even looked at an analysis of the standards, in every instance where the word slavery or slave was used. I even read the statement of the African-American scholars that wrote the standards — not Ron DeSantis, but the scholars,” he said. “Everybody involved in this says this is completely a fabricated issue.
“And yet look how quickly Kamala Harris jumped on it.”

Ashley Allison, a fellow CNN commentator, took issue with Jennings’ justification for the new rules based on who wrote them.
“And just because black people write it don’t mean — that doesn’t mean it’s going to be accurate. Like, we can disagree as black people as well,” she said, according to a CNN transcript.
But Jennings’ assessment of Harris is valid.
He hinted that politics, not history, had driven the vice president to criticize the new criteria by bringing up Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican candidate for the presidency.
Then then, history might end up being important. In June, Harris’ net favorability ratings for vice presidents fell to an all-time low.
She might be trying to salvage her damaged reputation by acting angry about insignificant sections in state education texts.
The vice president cannot be taken seriously based on the merits of the situation alone.
Harris is obviously not a serious person, as her lectures loaded with word salad have frequently shown.
These remarks, even by her standards, are trivial.
No reasonable person would conclude that the line in question — “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit” — translates to “enslaved people benefited from slavery.”
Slaves who were made to learn a craft by their masters typically fared better under harsh conditions than slaves who merely did manual work.
The fortunate few slaves who were able to escape or otherwise obtain their freedom undoubtedly benefited from whatever abilities they acquired while in servitude.
Nothing in these broad judgments could lessen the cruel nature of slavery.
Additionally, no history teacher in America would make this “skills” and “benefits” analysis the culmination of all lessons on slavery.
The real narrative was found there.
Vice presidents in particular have no business establishing historical “standards,” let alone making comments on them.
