The kind of meticulous police work required to apprehend a suspect in the more than ten-year-old Gilgo Beach murders is typically seen on TV crime dramas.
A Chevrolet Avalanche that was parked in plain sight also had a key.
Newsday claims that internal issues inside Long Island law enforcement may have contributed to the case’s delay in being solved, but Suffolk District Attorney Ray Tierney promised to redouble his efforts to do so after taking office in 2022.
Rex A. Heuermann, 59, of Massapequa Park, New York, was recently detained and charged with the killings of three women that occurred between 2007 and 2010. This arrest was the product of meticulous, laborious detective work.
Heuermann, a married father of two who practices architecture in Manhattan, was initially identified by FBI profilers as a middle-aged married white male.
He is accused of killing Megan Waterman, 22, of Scarborough, Maine, Melissa Barthelemey, 24, of the Bronx, New York City, and Amber Lynn Costello, 27, of West Babylon, New York.
According to Newsday, Heuermann is also a key suspect in the passing of Norwich, Connecticut resident Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25.
The Avalanche, which had been thought to be related to the killings, was a crucial piece of evidence. But for a while, it would consistently park in front of Heuermann’s house, even appearing on Google Street View, according to The New York Post.
According to the Post, it wasn’t until March 2022 that officials were able to link the Avalanche to Heurmann via vehicle registration.
Authorities discovered a suspect who suited Heuermann’s description of being 6 feet, 4 inches tall as the investigation was restarted.
Despite the suspect’s efforts to avoid detection by using burner phones, the inquiry also involved triangulating data from cell phone towers. According to Newsday, tests were also conducted on individual hair strands discovered on the victims’ bodies in an effort to match them with DNA discovered on a pizza box Heuermann had thrown away.
According to Newsday, the inquiry revealed that Heuermann frequently used the internet to look up violent pornography.
Along with Tierney, Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison also turned his attention to the matter after gaining office.
Harrison told Fox News that the inquiry necessitated striking a delicate balance between obtaining proof and being cautious not to give Heuermann away.
“We found out the Avalanche was connected to him around March – maybe early April,” Harrison said. “And then we started diving a little bit more deeper into who this individual was.
“We found out he was an architect and some other things,“ Harrison continued. “We were able to do some phone records and some other background checks, how he uses his credit card, look at his family – he has a wife and two kids – and just his lifestyle.
“And we started getting closer and closer, saying ‘Hey, this may be our person,’” Harrison said. “So we had to be careful … If he knew that people were following him, then anything could happen from then — he could flee the country and a whole host of other things.”
A collection of 200 weapons discovered in Heuermann’s home, whose unique appearance Harrison described as that of a 275-pound “ogre,” was one of Harrison’s concerns.
According to Newsday, the fact that the local police chief, a deputy, and the district attorney will serve prison sentences in 2016 and 2021 for their roles in a cover-up of the chief’s beating of a man who stole sex toys and pornography from the chief’s car may have caused delays in the investigation into the Gilgo Beach case.
There were ten apparent serial homicides on Long Island, according to the Netflix film “Lost Girls,” but it’s not thought that all of the victims, which included eight women, a man, and an infant, were murdered by the same individual.
