After parents raised concerns about student safety following two reported sexual assaults involving migrants, Buffalo State University quickly chose to force away dozens of illegal immigrants from its dorms this weekend.
The State University of New York (SUNY) in Buffalo is evicting 44 migrants after canceling an agreement with a local community group that had placed them in dorms.
“As we welcome our students back to campus on Tuesday, we wanted to ensure the best possible learning environment for our students as well as the smooth operation of our university operations,” said Buffalo State President Bonita Durand in a statement.
“I made the difficult decision to discontinue the revocable permit and want to reassure our university community that as our students return to campus Tuesday they will find their learning environment as they expected,” she said.
According to Dr. Myron Glick, president and CEO of Jericho Road Community Health Center, Buffalo State decided to allow illegal immigrants to dwell in the dorms beginning in May because the migrant shelter at Jericho Road was full.
“We live in a community where there’s prejudice,” Glick told the Buffalo News. “And this decision was made, really, in my opinion, as – what’s the right word? – in reaction to that prejudice.”
The decision comes after parents raised concern about two reported sexual assaults on migrants earlier this month in Cheektowaga, approximately a 15-minute drive from downtown Buffalo.
Durand did not mention the individual sexual assault incidents when discussing the decision.
On August 8, officials stated that a Venezuelan migrant had been accused of raping a woman in front of a three-year-old child. The alleged encounter took place on Wednesday after the suspect arrived in Erie County via New York City, which was apparently paying for his upstate hotel stay.
A second migrant from the Democratic Republic of the Congo was detained for sexual assault three days after the first was accused. After allegedly sexually assaulting a 27-year-old woman who was working with a community agency to give services to migrants, the second migrant was charged with sex abuse and unlawful confinement.
Before being detained, the migrants charged with sexual assault had arrived in the town of Cheektowaga, which is located immediately east of Buffalo.
Following the revelations of the alleged sexual assaults, Erie County, which contains Buffalo, urged that New York City Democratic Mayor Eric Adams stop bringing illegal migrants to the area.
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said Adams “agreed and informed me they will not send any additional persons to Erie County at this time. We also discussed the need for a new and improved security plan.”
So far, about 540 migrants have been transported to Erie County.
This month, Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul’s office said that Erie County will get additional New York National Guard men and assets to deal with the migrants. According to the governor’s administration, more than 1,800 National Guard men are already assisting with the migrant problem across the state.
Meanwhile, New York City is nearing capacity as it attempts to process the tens of thousands of undocumented migrants who have flooded into the city over the last year.
More than 90,000 migrants have landed in New York City since April of last year. As of last month, some 55,000 people were still being sheltered on the city’s dime, prompting New York’s homeless shelters to fill up.
Since last summer, the city has already spent $1.2 billion to assist migrants.
The problem appears to have irritated Adams, who has blamed everyone from Texas to the White House to New York’s state government for the city’s predicament.
