At least five states’ election offices have received envelopes containing white powder and a “vague” warning regarding halting elections, according to one police officer.
According to The Washington Post, the letters were delivered to offices in California, Georgia, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington, and four of them contained trace levels of fentanyl.
The letters arrived on Wednesday and Thursday.
Linda Farmer, auditor for Pierce County in Washington, displayed photographs of the mail and letter sent to her Tacoma office. The memo cautioned that “ballot drops,” which are used to collect absentee ballots in some states, were vulnerable.
“End elections now. Stop giving power to the right that they don’t have. We are in charge now and there is no more need for them,” the letter said.
It had an Antifa emblem, an LGBT “pride” flag, and a pentagram, which is commonly connected with Satanism.
The letter was mailed from Portland, Oregon.
According to the Seattle Times, Tacoma police spokesman William Muse stated the chemical within was baking soda.
“Something to the effect of stopping the election,” Muse said of the letter.
“There was no candidate that was identified. There was no religious-affiliated group identified. There was no political issue identified. It was just that vague statement,” he said.

“Law enforcement is working diligently to intercept any additional letters before they are delivered,” the FBI and U.S. Postal Inspection Service said in a joint statement Thursday.
CBS News reported that during the state’s primary in August, packages containing suspicious chemicals were delivered to King and Okanogan counties in Washington. The King County mail had traces of fentanyl, whereas the Okanogan County letter contained nothing hazardous.

In California, Secretary of State Shirley Weber announced that the US Postal Service had intercepted suspicious envelopes destined for Sacramento and Los Angeles election facilities.
“Federal and state authorities are investigating the incident, but there has been no confirmation that these envelopes contained any toxic substances,” Weber said in a statement. “Nevertheless, we are advising local election offices to take precautions before handling mail that arrives at their facilities.”
According to the Post, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger stated that an election office in Fulton County was targeted, prompting the state to send it naxalone to reverse any overdose caused by contact with fentanyl.
“This is domestic terrorism, and it needs to be condemned by anyone that holds elected office and anyone that wants to hold elective office anywhere in America,” Raffensperger said.
Devon Ashbridge, a spokesperson of the Lane County Elections Office in Eugene, Oregon, stated that no one who came into contact with the letter suffered any health consequences.
“Someone attempted to terrorize our elections staff, and that’s not OK,” Ashbridge said.
ABC News noted that the Texas Department of Public Safety and the FBI are looking into a letter received to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s office. It was unclear whether there was a link between the letter to Paxton and the ones issued to election authorities.
