After a 20-year-old worker was crushed to death in a horrific warehouse accident that probably might have been avoided if more safety precautions had been in place, Amazon was fined a pitiful $7,000.
“On the afternoon of May 8, Caes Gruesbeck, 20, was trying to clear an obstruction on an overhead package conveyor at an Amazon distribution center in Fort Wayne, Ind.,” The Washington Post reported Sunday.
“He was en route to the jam in an elevated lift when his head collided with the conveyor and became trapped by the machinery, according to a Sept. 18 safety order. He died of blunt force injuries.”
Indiana safety regulators found after an 11-week inquiry that Amazon had not provided a safe workplace “free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death.”
“According to the Indiana safety order, Amazon should have properly trained employees like Gruesbeck, enforced safety rules about driving elevated lifts under low clearance machinery and more clearly demarcated ‘danger zones,’” the Post reported.
Amazon was hit with a meager $7,000 fine, the highest permitted in Indiana, for a safety citation, even though it was discovered that the company had violated workplace standards, resulting in death.
Remarkably, the massive conglomerate, with revenue exceeding $513 billion in 2022, is challenging the $7,000 penalty.
Keep in mind how the conglomerate, under the leadership of left-wing billionaire Jeff Bezos, donated $10 million to the Black Lives Matter movement.
This movement revolves around concerns related to race.
Even worse, the Post claims that because of Indiana’s lax labor regulations, Caes Gruesbeck’s mother is unable to sue for wrongful death in a civil court.
Based on his obituary, Caes was her only child and was about to turn 21 years old. His mother’s husband passed away in 2021, leaving her a widow.
The severe punishment meted out horrified Stephen Wagner, an Indiana lawyer who defends workers’ rights.
“Seven thousand dollars for the death of a 20-year-old? What’s that going to do to Amazon?” Wagner told the Post. “There’s no real financial incentive for an employer like Amazon to change their working environment to make it more safe.”
Several worker fatalities have befallen Amazon in recent years, including three in a single month in the summer of 2022.
Amazon has been under heavy investigation due to numerous allegations of terrible working conditions and unacceptably high injury rates. According to Forbes, Amazon will be the second-largest employer in the United States in 2022.
According to an October CBS News story, the Center for Urban Economic Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted research earlier this year that revealed an astounding 41% of Amazon employees have suffered workplace injuries.
Many people criticized Amazon’s treatment of its employees and the state of India’s punishment of the corporation on Caes Gruesbeck’s obituary page.
“I worked there at the time that this happened. Amazon doesn’t care like they should, they need to put more thought into safety,” one wrote.
Another commenter noted:
“I just stumbled upon this page as i happened to read the news that state of Indiana fined Amazon with $7000 because of a death of Amazon worker at the facility. I am amazed to see how little a value of human life is.”
Amazon spokesperson Maureen Lynch Vogel defended the company’s actions, including its response to Gruesbeck’s death, in an email to the Post.
“Our thoughts continue to be with our employee’s family and team at the site,” Vogel wrote, according to the Post. “After the tragedy, we immediately closed the facility, notified Indiana OSHA, and began cooperating with their investigation.”
According to the Post, the email said that Gruesbeck’s training was current and that he was wearing the appropriate safety gear.
That most likely gives his mother a lot of comfort.
