An armed intruder breaks into a woman’s home, expecting an easy target. Little did he know, he was about to meet his match. While she didn’t have a gun, her chosen weapon proved to be just as effective and agonizing, as evidenced by the man’s mangled face.
Thirty-one-year-old Larondrick Macklin probably thought he had the situation under control when he burst into a southwest Decatur, Alabama home on Thursday. According to Newsweek, he stormed into the house at the 2800 block of Wimberly Drive, armed with a pistol. Reports from Al.com suggest the residence belonged to his ex-girlfriend.
As Macklin flaunted his firearm, the unnamed woman couldn’t grab her own, but she found an equally potent weapon. With Macklin allegedly causing chaos and terrorizing the woman, she fought back with a pot of scalding-hot cooking grease. In an act of fierce self-defense, she hurled the boiling liquid at the man’s face.
The searing grease inflicted severe burns, incapacitating Macklin long enough for the authorities to arrive after being alerted about the disturbance. On their arrival, the Decatur Police Department officers detained Macklin, who was still at the scene. A detective deemed him the “primary aggressor in the altercation,” as reported by USA Today.
Police confirmed that Macklin “entered the victim’s house with a firearm, and the victim defended herself with a pot containing hot grease.” He was taken to the hospital to treat his burns before being sent to jail without incident. The woman won’t face charges, but Macklin won’t be so fortunate.
Though some outlets claim the woman was Macklin’s ex-girlfriend, a police spokesperson informed USA Today that the relationship couldn’t be confirmed. They acknowledged the incident was domestic but declined to discuss the details.
Larondrick Macklin now faces first-degree domestic violence and burglary felony charges, which could land him in prison for life if convicted. According to criminal justice firm Darley Law LLC, first-degree domestic violence is a Class A felony, while a Birmingham-based criminal justice attorney, Bradford Ladner, LLP, describes the burglary charge as “the most serious Alabama burglary charge.” Consequently, Macklin was held at the Morgan County jail with a bail set at $300,000, as reported by Al.com.
The intended victim survived this terrifying ordeal thanks to quick thinking and some luck. If she hadn’t had a pot of hot grease within reach, the outcome could have been far grimmer.
This serves as a reminder for all of us to be prepared to defend ourselves against potential threats. Although a suspect is innocent until proven guilty, Macklin’s intentions were likely far from friendly, given his weapon of choice. Thankfully, the woman never had to discover his true intentions.
