Senator Joe Manchin has been generating headlines by opposing an effort by the Obama administration to add individuals who receive Social Security Benefits, and have someone appointed to manage their finances, to the NICS system as prohibited persons.
Presumably under the guise that if a person has someone appointed to manage their finances, that person is too incompetent to own a firearm. It is a similar tactic the VA has been using to deny Second Amendment rights to Veterans.
This comes on the heels of Manchin making a statement in July that we should use the “full weight of the government” to bring about gun control.
Why the schizophrenic behavior Joe?
The Senator understands a political principle. Senior citizens vote. Elderly Americans have the highest voter turnout of any demographic. And Joe Manchin fears the wrath of West Virginia’s senior population.
Unfortunately for him, he has miscalculated the rest of West Virginia’s voting demographics. West Virginians care deeply about their right to bear arms, across nearly every walk of life. And we are going to remember his betrayal of our heritage and our rights.
Do not be fooled by the Senator’s on-again off-again inconsistency in the media. I have sat face to face with him. We have discussed the Second Amendment.
Senator Manchin told me directly that self-defense and defense from tyranny are not functions of the Second Amendment in his view, even when faced with the words of the founders.
The Senator has failed to understand that the firearm-owning world has changed. This is not the 1960s. Firearm ownership is no longer predominately about hunting. It is about defending our lives.
Manchin is not willing to gamble votes with senior citizens, because he knows they will show up at the polls. But the rest of you, he will sacrifice for whatever political favors and financial donations he can gather in Washington.
He thinks you will not remember in 2018. He is banking on your apathy. I suspect you will remember quite clearly. And I suspect you’ll show up at the polls both in 2016 and 2018.
