Richard Gere’s got himself into some trouble by putting up a huge cell phone tower on his property in upstate New York. The 73-year-old actor has ticked off his rich neighbors, including Kate Mara and Rooney Mara‘s parents, ’cause they say he didn’t tell them about his plans to build the 130-foot tall tower.
Neighbors are worried the big tower is not just ugly, but it might mess with their cell phone signal and even cause health problems. The tower went up in the summer of 2021, and nobody knew about it until it was already working.
People living nearby Gere’s inn have complained a lot, saying he didn’t think about how his actions would affect them. Now, everyone’s so mad they’re taking the fight to court.
No one knows what the court’s gonna decide, but it doesn’t look like the tower’s coming down anytime soon. This whole mess has caused bad vibes between Gere and his wealthy neighbors.
In July 2021, Verizon even sued the town of Bedford ’cause they were told “no” twice when they wanted to build a cell phone tower. They wanted better cell service and help for emergency workers, as the Federal Telecommunications Act, says.
One neighbor, Kathleen Rooney Mara, said she’s not happy about the view:
“In the winter, I have a gorgeous vista. And I look forward to it every year. Now I’ll be looking at an ugly tower that will soon be obsolete if the location is approved.”
No one knows if Richard Gere will be allowed to keep the cell phone tower, but for now, his neighbors are super mad at him. We’ll have to wait and see if they can work something out.
